Know Who’s on Your Porch without Opening the Door
Defending your home from intruders is a serious matter. One of the easiest ways to defend your home is to know who is at the door before you open it. Even during the day, a friendly knock on the door could turn into a horrific scenario. Peephole installation is affordable, easy, and can help protect you against unwanted visitors. The peephole can be installed in any door, whether it is made of wood, steel, fiberglass, or other composite material.
Why Do You Need a Peephole?
A peephole can give you the added security your home needs to help protect you, your family, and your home from intruders. Many people open their doors to a strange knock without even thinking about who or what is on the other side. This is a huge mistake that can lead to forced entry into your home. With a peephole, you can safely look through the door to find out what is waiting on the other side, before you open the door. Not only is it great to avoid intruders, but it is also a great way to avoid overly-friendly neighbors, salespeople, religious solicitors, and even the dreaded mother-in-law.
How Do Peepholes Work?
A peephole consists of two parts; the lens and the prism. The lens is fitted into the inside of the door, and the prism is connected at the outside of the door during the peephole installation. When the two pieces are screwed together they give the insider a clear view of who is outside, while the outsider can only see blurry dark shapes through their end.
What Types of Peepholes Are There?
The older style peepholes only allowed a straight view of what was outside the door. Today, the newer peepholes offer a wider angled view of what is on the other side. This prevents intruders from being able to stand out of view. There are several styles of peepholes offered on the market, some even offering views several feet away from the door. You can find ones that have an optimized viewing area for visually impaired people.
Installing a Peephole
Peephole installation is easy; the first step is to find the location on the door. You need to create the hole at a height that is comfortable for you, as well s offering optimal viewing of the person outside. If the hole is too low, you may not be able to see the persons face, if it is too high, shorter people outside the door could go unnoticed. Drill the hole at a level that is comfortable for the shortest person in your family. This is within reason, you obviously will not install one that fits your six year olds needs, and they should not be answering the door anyhow. If you do have someone shorter in the home, or you do want to install one for a child, consider creating two separate peepholes in the door. You simply drill a hole in the location desired with a hole saw, using a pilot bit. Start the drill from the inside of the door, stopping immediately after the pilot bit comes through the other side. Drill again from the outside in to ensure a perfect fit. With the door open, place the two pieces in the proper place and screw them together.
